February 2015: Many new images have been added to The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve Riverine Ecology taken over January 2015 at The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve of The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project gallery, including views, fauna and flora - including a never before seen species of robber fly that is using an unusual combination of Batesian mimicry. Press here to explore the many images of The Meerkat Magic Valley Reserve Riverine Ecology album.

A very rare sighting of a fly that is similar in appearance to a bumble bee. This is a form of Batesian mimicry. The fly has two wings, the bee has four. The black and yellow markings are aposematic or warning markings - but these are false warnings since the fly here is harmless to predators! However there is an interesting twist of deception here - this is a robber fly species = it is actually not a harmless fly, it actively hunts for other flies!

It has a very advanced mixed deception in appearance signals. It is warning predators that it could have a nasty taste or venom / poison if they attack it due to the markings, and at the same time it is attempting to deceive prey into ignoring it as a non- threat since the bumble bee would not be hunting prey - so it blatantly reveals itself to predators, and pretends that it is harmless to the prey that it is hunting! A double deception!
