Nature Stories: NATURE CREATIVE WRITING STORIES BY GRETA GREER
Submitted on Wednesday, November 24 @ 08:49:31 UTC by Grant

Creative GalleriesThe following four Nature creative writing stories have been kindly provided by Greta Greer. They are most entertaining and focus on the antics of an unusual meerkat / suricate and his friends!

Please read them all below....

1

ZOOM IN ON … MEERKAT!

Meerkat lives in the Karoo.

Nothing happens in the Karoo.

Meerkat lives at the foot of Hill.

Nothing happens at the foot of Hill.

Meerkat lives beside Dry Scrub.

Nothing happens beside Dry Scrub.

Meerkat lives in his very own, very personal, very private burrow.

Nothing much happens there either.

That is why – when we zoom in on Meerkat – we don't find him in his own private burrow or beside Dry Scrub or at the foot of Hill.

We do find him SOMEWHERE in the Karoo, though.

We find Meerkat lying on his back in the sun

on a rock

close to Road

scratching himself and

waiting for Nothing to happen.

That's the real trick – to wait for Nothing to happen. If you wait for Something to happen, Nothing gets jealous and won't let Something in.  Meerkat has learnt if you wait long enough Nothing gets bored with itself and wanders off. That's exactly when Something slips in and HAPPENS all over the place.

Like now – all of a sudden Wind HAPPENS and blows Meerkat's beanie right off his head. Now there's action! Now there's a soccer game on! Meerkat jumps up and looks to see what Wind is doing with his beanie. Wind is playing with his beanie – dribbling it. Meerkat jumps off the rock and rushes after his beanie. He's going like a Boeing. He's jumping like a springbuck. He's rolling like thunder. He's ducking and dodging. He's cool. He's almost got his beanie. He pounces like a leopard … and Wind grabs his beanie and throws it into an acasia tree.

Wind hisses 'Laduuuuuuuma – GOAL!' Meerkat grins. One for Wind, zero for Meerkat, but the game has just begun.

Meerkat throws a stone into the tree to dislodge his beanie. Once, twice … and the beanie comes tumbling down. Meerkat grabs it before Wind can. He holds on tightly. 'Laduuuuuma – GOAL!' shouts Meerkat. He puts his beanie back on his head and walks towards Road where the sun is heating up the rock.

Suddenly Wind honks like a vuvuzela. Meerkat reaches for his head. Too late! Wind has his beanie again and dangles it just out of Meerkat's reach. He chases his beanie-soccer-ball over the dusty veld. Wind brings it low and sweeps it up again. Meerkat chases. Meerkat jumps. Meerkat grabs. Wind blows his beanie high, higher, highest – right on top of a telephone pole.

"Meerkat," Wind laughs, "only if you get this one down will we be even!" She blows away.

"Humph!" says Meerkat.

The telephone pole is high. Higher than the thorn tree. Higher than Hill.  Meerkat thinks of scaling the pole, he thinks of chopping it down, he thinks of … Meerkat can't think anymore. He is tired. He decides to wait for Nothing.

He leans against the telephone pole and looks bored until he is bored. He flops down. He rolls onto his back. He closes his eyes.

"Caw!" Crow shouts. Meerkat opens one eye. Crow is sitting on top of the telephone pole.

Meerkat says: "If you pass me my beanie, Crow, I'll give you a marble."

Crow looks at Meerkat. "Serious?" she asks. Meerkat nods. "Follow me," he says and walks towards the foot of Hill and in the direction of Dry Scrub and his very own, very private burrow. Crow follows with the beanie.

Meerkat disappears down his burrow and comes up with a marble which he rolls towards Crow. She drops the beanie, picks up the marble and flies away.

Meerkat goes back into his burrow and lovingly hangs up his beanie. He exits carrying his vuvuzela. He goes into his battle stance, breathes deeply, puffs out his chest and shouts "TWO ALL, WIND!"

Then Meerkat runs in tight little circles, honking his vuvu, loving his life, knowing that THE KAROO IS CHAMPION!

2

ZOOM IN ON … THE FRIENDS!

Meerkat is a meerkat.

Meerkat lives in the Karoo.

He lives at the foot of Hill.

He lives next to Dry Scrub.

The Karoo is the Karoo,

Hill is a hill.

Dry Scrub is a dry scrub.

Planted firmly next to Dry Scrub and tied to it is a wooden sign that reads:

Meerkat's very own,

VERY PRIVATE,

very personal Burrow.

NEVER A LENDER NOR A BORROWER BE

As you can see, the things in this story are as they are.

And sometimes they are not.

It is that kind of story.

The Karoo is that kind of place.

Wind blows a lot in the Karoo.

That is how Meerkat finds two friends.

Meerkat stands in the middle of Wind.

He stands on top of Hill.

He closes his eyes.

He imagines an aeroplane.

He imagines he is in the aeroplane.

He imagines he is flying the aeroplane.

Wind blows something around Meerkat's neck.

Meerkat thinks it is a scarf.

Meerkat thinks a scarf is fine.

When you are flying your own plane you need a scarf.

Wind blows something over Meerkat's head.

Meerkat thinks it is a pair of goggles.

Meerkat thinks a pair of goggles is fine.

When you are flying your own plane you need a pair of goggles.

Meerkat is smiling.

His eyes are closed.

Wind is blowing all around him.

Meerkat is flying his own plane.

He has a scarf and a pair of goggles.

Wind stops blowing.

Meerkat opens his eyes.

It is dark.

He cannot see.

Meerkat feels his goggles.

His goggles feel like a bucket.

He lifts the bucket off his head.

He throws it away.

The bucket rolls.

Meerkat feels his scarf.

His scarf feels like a rope.

Meerkat tries to take the rope off.

The rope clings.

Meerkat jumps up and down.

He tries to loosen the rope.

The rope does not want to be loosened.

Meerkat screams: "Let go of me! Let go of me!"

The rope pleads: "I am Rope. I like it here. I like your neck. I don't want to leave."

Meerkat states: "But it is MY neck! I own it. LET GO OF MY NECK!"

Rope asks: "Will you throw me away? You threw Bucket away!"

Meerkat gives in: "I will not throw you away. I will keep you."

Rope loosens himself. He falls to the ground. He looks at Meerkat.

Meerkat sits down. He looks at Rope.

Meerkat asks: "Is Bucket our friend?"

Rope says: "If you fetch Bucket he will be our friend."

Meerkat fetches Bucket. He puts Bucket next to Rope.

The three friends look at each other.

Meerkat says to Rope: "Your name is Rope and you are a rope. I like that."

Meerkat says to Bucket: "Your name is Bucket and you are a bucket. I like that."

Rope and Bucket say to Meerkat: "Your name is Meerkat and you are a meerkat. We like that. Now we are friends. We are the Three Meerkatteers."

Meerkat says: "I've never had friends before. Is it easy?"

"Oh yes," says Bucket and Rope. "Friendship is a wonderful thing!"

The friends chat until the sun begins to set. Meerkat says: "That's it, guys, I'm off to bed."

Bucket jumps onto Meerkat's head and Rope circles Meerkat's neck.

"You can't leave us, Meerkat. We are friends now," they remind him.

They refuse to undo themselves until Meerkat promises to take them home.

Meerkat grabs Bucket's handle and throws Rope over his shoulder. He trudges on home. Meerkat isn't sure whether friendship is as easy or as wonderful as his two new friends promised.

At home Meerkat ties Rope's one end onto his wooden sign. The other end of Rope he ties onto Bucket's handle. He says good night and creeps deep into his very own, very personal, very private burrow and goes to sleep.

3

ZOOM IN ON … THE TYRE

Meerkat says to his two friends: "Let's go to Road. We can stand next to him and look at things."

They agree and Meerkat carries them to Road.

They look up the road and they look down the road. They see nothing. They smile.

"I like it when things are as they are," they say.

They wait for Nothing to happen.

They hear a truck.

They turn their heads to the left.

They wait.

They watch the truck rumbling past and slowly turn their heads to the right.

When they turn their heads left again, they see a tyre rolling down Road.

"I wonder where that tyre is going?" asks Rope.

Bucket says: "It's following the truck."

"I think the truck started off without it," says Meerkat. "It looks as if the tyre is trying to catch up with the truck. That's why it is going so fast."

Bucket says: "Or maybe it fell off. When I go too fast I fall off."

Rope asks: "What do you fall off from, Bucket?"

Bucket rolls his eyes: "I fall off myself, Rope, what else?"

Meerkat pulls his beanie over his eyes and groans.

Rope sighs: "Doh-dangle-a-doodle-doughnut."

Meerkat looks again: "If that tyre stops rolling we can play with it."

Rope yells: "Let's go!"

They walk down the side of Road. They find the tyre. It is lying still.

Bucket asks: "Do you think it is dead? Look, it isn't moving."

Rope replies: "Tyres are always dead."

Meerkat grins: "Except when they're rolling, of course."

Bucket asks: "What can we do with a tyre?"

Rope suggests: "We can make a swimming pool."

"Or we can roll all over the Karoo in it," says Meerkat.

Bucket says: "I rust in water, so I don't like swimming, but I do like the idea of rolling, Meerkat."

Meerkat ties Rope to the tyre and pulls it way up to the top of Hill.

The three friends get inside.

Bucket asks: "Do we have a licence to drive a tyre?"

Rope says: "We don't need a licence to drive one wheel."

Meerkat shouts: "Hold on, guys. Licence or no licence – we're off!"

The tyre starts rolling – faster and faster it goes! The friends are going faster than the truck. They are going faster than Wind. The tyre shoots through a dry river bed and up the other side.

"Stop! Stop!" moans Bucket. "This feels dangerous and I don't do dangerous. STOP!"

"We can't stop, Bucket," yells Meerkat, "we're on a roll here. Besides we have no brakes!"

Bucket groans while the tyre swerves around a tree, bumps over an aloe, jumps over a donga and finally slams into a rock.

Bucket flies through the air, still moaning sadly. The tyre wobbles and falls on its side.

Meerkat and Rope jump out.

"That was wonderful!" shouts Meerkat.

"Absolutely awesome!" agrees Rope.

"Where's Bucket?" wonders Meerkat.

Rope says: "Listen – can you hear him? If we follow the sad moaning, Bucket is sure to be at the end of it."

They find Bucket on a rock. He is full of dents.

"That was terrible," moans Bucket. "Look at all my dents! I told you I fall off things. I told you I don’t do dangerous. I told you to stop. I told you we need a licence to drive tyres. That was absolutely horrible. I don't ever want to see that tyre again."

Rope and Meerkat sit with Bucket until he feels better. Meerkat picks him up and carries him back to Dry Scrub.

That night Rope and Meerkat wait until Bucket is asleep before they get the tyre.

The wooden sign is tied to Dried Scrub. Rope is tied to the sign. Bucket is tied to Rope … and so is the tyre. Bucket is sleeping peacefully.

4

ZOOM IN ON … THE VISITOR!

When Meerkat, Bucket and Rope return home, there is a note stuck on Dry Scrub. It says 'See you at noon. I'm all excited!"

The friends read the card from all angles. The words don't change. The message stays the same.

"Who can it be?" asks Meerkat.

"It must be someone who has a pen and paper," Bucket says.

Rope says: "Or someone who knows someone who has a pen and paper. Do you know someone like that Meerkat?"

"I know lots of someones like that. What I don't get is the excited part. I don’t know anyone who will be excited to be with me."

"Then it must be a stranger, someone who doesn't know you!" says Rope.

"A stranger who knows other strangers who have strange pencils and strange papers!" says Bucket and rattles with glee.

Meerkat pulls his beanie over his eyes.

"Doh-dangle-a-doodle-doughnut," groans Rope.

Meerkat squints at the sun. "We have less than one hour to prepare for our unknown guest, my friends. Let's get started!"

Nobody moves. Nobody knows how to get started for a visitor.

Rope asks: "Uh … what shall we do, Meerkat? What does one do for a guest?"

Meerkat scratches his chin. He thinks. "A tablecloth! We need a tablecloth!"

He disappears into his very own very personal burrow and brings out a snow white tablecloth which he drapes over the tyre. He uses Rope to tie the tablecloth down.

"Flowers!" shouts Meerkat. He bounds across the Karoo veld and finds aloe flowers which he plonks into Bucket.

"Now, friends, we get radically cool!" says Meerkat and dashes into his burrow. Bucket rattles and Rope gnashes his teeth. When they see Meerkat again, he is sleek and combed. He is wearing a brand new beanie. On his wrist is an important-looking watch.

And he is swaggering. He swaggers over to the wooden sign and leans against it. He looks left and he looks right. He glances at the watch.

"Holy bee," Rope gnashes. "Look at our bro'!"

Bucket says: "Something leaves a bitter taste in my mouth."

"It's the feeling of being ignored by a friend," gnashes Rope.

"I thought it was the aloe juice," says Bucket and spits.

Meerkat says: "Now we wait, friends, we wait." He sits down. After an hour he gets up. After an hour he sits down. He gets up. He sits down.

"It seems as if your friend is late," gnashes Rope.

"Why are you gnashing, Rope?" asks Meerkat.

"Because I have been hugging a tyre for three hours, because my arms are aching, because I have a head ache," gnashes Rope.

"Sorry," says Meerkat and unties him.

Bucket spits.

"Why are you spitting, Bucket?" asks Meerkat.

"The aloe juice is bitter," answers Bucket.

"Sorry," says Meerkat and removes the flowers.

"Let's pack up," says Meerkat. "I'm tired of waiting." He returns everything to his burrow.

"It's a sad thing," says Meerkat, "when a visitor doesn't show up."

"It's bad manners," agrees Rope."

"And very bitter," says Bucket spitting into the dust.

Just then Wind grabs Meerkat's brand new beanie and blows it half way up Hill. Meerkat dashes after it. The beanie gets stuck on a low scrub and Meerkat gets hold of it easily.

"No goal," Meerkat says to Wind.

"Not for the beanie," she smiles. "But I definitely score one for the note!"

"You blew the note onto Dry Scrub? I should have known!" laughs Meerkat. "But you get only half a point for that because I'm the one who has the beanie!"

Wind laughs and blows away.
